Before we build, we investigate.
Before we build products, we investigate signals, behaviors and systems. Research is the long part of the work, and most of what we learn never becomes a product.
- Observation
- We spend time with the problem in the place it happens — the field, the clinic, the site — and record what is actually there before deciding what it means.
- Experimentation
- Small, disposable tests designed to be cheap to be wrong about. Most ideas end here, which is the point of the phase.
- Prototype
- The first version that can be held, worn or deployed. Built to be broken by real conditions rather than demonstrated in ideal ones.
- Validation
- Structured testing against conditions we did not choose, with protocols and acceptance criteria written before the test, not after.
- Deployment
- Field use alongside the people the work was built for, with the operating constraints they actually have.
Current work concentrates on acoustic and vibration sensing, low-power distributed hardware, and signal interpretation that runs on the device rather than in a data centre. These constraints are deliberate: the environments we care about often have no power, no network and no operator to spare.
