We assume the worst operating conditions first: no mains power, no reliable network, a user with one free hand and very little time. A system that survives those assumptions works comfortably everywhere else.
That is also why we favour commodity hardware. A technology that requires a rare component, a proprietary radio or a subscription cannot be deployed by the organisations that need it most.
